Hello readers!

1 03 2011

I’ve started this blog in response to requests from my friends to write further about my cowardly exploits in the hills of Britain and elsewhere.

I’m admiring your lovely photographs. I, too, am afraid of heights, so it’s good to sit back and enjoy your exploits!

Thanks Max. Actually, the fear of heights diminishes quite a bit with experience but never totally goes away – after all, we’re SUPPOSED to be afraid of heights!

Thanks Malc. Don’t worry about the typos – I’m a proficient touchtypist but am likely to make mistakes now due to the very odd keyboard layout on my new laptop! 😦

Loved your report and photos on the 2 fisherfields from Kinlochewe and would like to try that route. Do you happen to have a gpx or map for the route that I could look at? Thanks.

Hi Susan, thanks for your compliment on my photos – I try my best. They’re not all so beautiful though as some are included in posts for illustration of routes and suchlike and then often are not so great!

The last walking holiday I went on was to the New Forest. It was great. All that fresh air after life in the big city took my breath away, quite literally!

Which city do you live in? Here or abroad?

The New Forest is lovely – I used to go there a lot before I started going to Scotland so much – I miss it quite a bit and must get back down there soon. I used to ‘camp’ in my car down there and primarily went down to see the wild ponies as I love horses. The countryside down there is lovely too though 🙂

I had to laugh when I read your header and your description of your blog. My adventures in the mountains here in the U.S. have usually been “panic-stricken” and cowardly. I’m afraid of heights, you see. But I love being in the mountains. It is a strange combination. lol!

Thank you for stopping by my blog. 🙂

I read your blog whenever I get time as I find it very uplifting. Mountain cowardice/fear of heights and the compulsion we get to go into the hills are indeed a strange mix! When I say I’m afraid of heights, most people ask why on earth I visit the mountains!

hi Carol, I used to read and converse with you on WH, went off for a while and noticed yourself and a few others were no longer members when i came back, monty being one and he`s now back, i can`t remember the other ones missing. sorry to hear what happened , you always encouraged me , thanks. I`ve read what happened through the comments on your blog, and have now subscribed to you…..i think. ;0)

Hiya – great to hear from you – I remember you well 🙂 A few others have left yeah. Never mind, I’m enjoying having a blog much better than being on the forum (although I’m now on another walking forum anyway, mainly in case I need to ask questions and stuff). All my old reports will end up on here eventually but I’m primarily using them to fill in gaps between trips just now as I’m having a very busy year’s Munroing so having a lot to write about!

According to my admin page, it hasn’t listed any more subscribers tonight. You might just have subscribed to this comment section. Try the ‘follow’ button – should be at the top of the page – that’s the newest and easiest way I think. The old way, which should still work, is to click on the ‘sign me up’ button under ‘e-mail Subscription’ at the top of the right-hand column on the home page.

Hope you’re having a good time in the hills this year,
Carol.

You ‘kindof’ just disappeared from the WH site…..about a year ago. Just catching up on the some of what happened. I do send reports to the WH site occasionally when I have gone out on a ‘not often covered’ wee journey. I don’t tend to write much just send a few images with some notes perhaps to get folks to, perhaps, try a different area of hills. It would seem that most folks are on the trail of the magic munros. Although having said that there are now quite a number that combine amazing journeys taking three categories of Scottish hills during the same trip. Well I guess that is a bit easier to avoid too much repetition, for me, since most of the days out are for Corbetts. Good to see that you are still very active and coming regularly up to Alba.

Now here’s a surprise 😀 ! Remember reading your stuff on Walkhighlands ages ago – but didn’t realise you had become persona non grata – real shame – you always dished out nice comments as I remember. Haven’t been there myself for a while. It’s fun having your own blog though – you can write about a lot more than you can on a forum. Noticed your blog title on Alex and Bob’s site and thought…has to be!

Great blog btw! Thoroughly enjoyed having a peek at the previous posts. Now off to create another RSS feed on my site so I can see what new stuff you put up.

Hi Kenny, Nice to hear from you. I did use to dish out nice comments but still got banned unfortunately 😦 As did my poor walking buddy Richard – and he hadn’t been in any arguments at all!

Glad you’ve set up an RSS feed as I’m just about to post a typical ‘mountain coward’ horror story from Torridon soon! 😮

Thanks for the welcome Carol…good to hear from you again.

I’ve been having trouble with my Open ID via WordPress so the link to my blog doesn’t work on my posting ID (ie kenny@fatdogwalks.com). The Fatdog and I are on WordPress at…

http://wherethefatdogwalks.wordpress.com/

It always feels a bit crass having to do this but if I don’t there’s no obvious way of other blog owners realising the blog exists. 😆

Anyway I’m off to have a wee peek at your Torridon posts now. 😀

Hmmm – Hi David – I didn’t exactly delete my account – I got banned! Long story, I was getting picked on by 4 users on WH and Mr. Webster apparently found it easier to ban me (plus one of the bullies) rather than keep tidying up posts/sending out warnings to the culprits etc 😦

It’s much more fun having a blog though isn’t it! 🙂

Hi Carol,
I remember reading your posts on Crib Goch while I was trying to make it up and over there. It was a huge help to read someone else’s descriptions of that feeling of exposure that matched my own after years spent trying to explain to people that it wasn’t heights or scrambling on their own that were the problem.
In case you haven’t been over yourself yet, I thought you might be interested to know that having had to turn back on my first try (before even reaching the ridge) I made it over at the end of last year after trying out hypnotherapy. I did as part of a newspaper feature I was writing and also made a video diary, so feel free to take a look at any of those on my own blog http://www.david-lawson.info
If you were going to give hypnotherapy a go I would recommend the chap I went to or finding someone close to home who is well recommended, but for going over Crib Goch itself I can’t recommend anyone more highly than Nigel Shepherd, the mountain guide who came with me to make sure I stayed safe. He was brilliant and really kept me relaxed (as well as safe).
Thanks again, and I really hope you make it up there!
David

Hi David,
Glad to see you’ve made it across the fearsome Crib Goch! I haven’t yet unfortunately. To be honest I haven’t really been to Wales at all for the last few years as I’ve been going up to Scotland most months Munro-bagging. I might give some thought to hypnotherapy but I think my main problem, if I were to try it, are which of my problems and defects to fix first LOL!

I’m hoping not to have to get an actual guide for my attempt as I belong to a climbing club not far from the foot of the ridge so I’m rather hoping someone in the club will get me across. I have a few friends in the club who have offered if I’m there at the same time as them. I’ll need perfect weather though.

Did you go over the pinnacles, round them or a combination?
Carol.

Great website and good to see you’re keeping up the high standard of walk reports. As a periodic sufferer from mountain cowardice myself (particularly since I fell off) I know about Cuillin anxiety. Sgurr Mhic Coinnich and Sgurr Dubh stand between me and completion so will have to regain some courage at some point.

Cheers

Dan

Ah a name I remember! Hi Dan – glad to see you managed to make a note of my blog address before Mr. Webster deleted it (yet again). You might have noticed me and him appear to have fallen out somewhat. What happened? Well, I’m actually considering writing a separate page covering that… but basically, I was banned for BEING bullied on Walkhighlands. I gathered it was just too much trouble for him to have to keep cleaning up posts so he just banned me. No warning, nothing – just one day I couldn’t log in! Had to get Monty to check out what had happened 😦

Thanks for your complimentary comments anyway. What did you fall off? That would finish me I think – so would seeing someone fall off. Sgurr Dubh doesn’t look too bad (although I’m still not sure I’ll be up to it) but Mhic Coinnich looks horrendous doesn’t it! 😮
