Quick Rant About The Conspiracy Theorists!

14 07 2020

Was in a shop the other day next to a lady with a mask on who was paying at the till. Another lady in the shop suddenly laid into her verbally about wearing the mask…

Turns out she was a conspiracy theorist and she seemed absolutely wacko with her views. She was an anti-masker, an anti-vaxxer and a Covid-19 denier as well as having zero medical knowledge to boot!

Firstly, according to her, there was no such thing as a transmissible virus – a virus was a dead thing which lived in your body simply to clear out toxins. She said it was impossible for anyone to catch a disease from anyone else. Myself and the lady pointed out that many have died from this virus.

“No-one has died” she asserted. “The doctors have been busily writing out fake death certificates for all (45000 plus) fatalities to date on Government instructions”

I was really, really hoping at this point that the lady with the mask hadn’t had a close relative or loved one die of this disease…

Luckily, at this point the lady finished paying, exchanged an eye roll with me and left. So now ms nutter started on me…

The lines on the shop floor keeping people 6 feet apart (2 metres in ‘foreign’) were part of the plan too. As was the preference for everyone to pay by contactless card. She said the government’s aim was for everyone to go cashless (to be honest, I agree that they will certainly take advantage of this situation to make us go cashless).

Furthermore, she said, the lines were to space everyone out for facial recognition which was coming soon she said. She asserted that, in the very near future, we will go into a shop and pick up goods, the facial recognition will scan us and take the money out of our account. She said this is already the case in China (I have to admit I don’t know whether it is or not but somehow I doubt it).

She ranted on for a while longer but then paid for her stuff and left me in peace but she was back again the next day spouting more nonsense and berating the shop for believing ‘all the nonsense’ and putting distancing measures in place etc.

My readers may by now be saying she is entitled to her views. Well, yes, she is. However, she isn’t entitled to berate mask wearers, the shop or its staff and it is worrying that she might start on someone who ends up believing her rubbish (wherever she got it from).

Of course, the biggest worry is – she won’t be washing her hands or sanitising because, of course, the disease just doesn’t exist (in her head)! Very worrying! I think she should be kept in to keep everyone else safe…

I loathe wearing a face mask but at the moment it’s a necessary evil.

I think the effect of lockdown on mental health has been pretty bad. I know it’s affected mine – my job hasn’t got any less stressful as a result of working at home and swimming and hill walking which are my main ways of de-stressing haven’t been an option. Getting a DVT during lockdown wasn’t ideal either!

I have to say that I really enjoyed the being alone bit – I just objected to when the government was trying to tell us we shouldn’t be going outside at all – not even to exercise – in the early days. I pretty much took no notice of that!

I felt really sorry for folk who didn’t live in the country, have a garden or have any nice walking near them…

This woman is clearly deluded, and to deny the virus exists is madness. I have my own views on how the episode has been handled, the various messages that have been put across and their resulting wider effects, but what this does show is the extent to which it’s affected people’s mental health. Sadly, that’s one aspect of the crisis that will take a long time to heal.

I don’t think it’s the lockdown or handling which has affected her thinking – I think she’s just ‘that type’. But the handling of the virus and the lockdown have had huge impacts on many folks’ mental health, that’s for sure. There has been a lot of mishandling but I suppose the Government have had a lot on their plate and just as they’d started to deal with Brexit.

I’m looking forward to the compulsory wearing of masks in shops – it should keep some of her type out of them hopefully…

Apparently, she’s been in the shop yet again (buying exactly the same thing – more toothpaste – 3 tubes in a week so far) and, this time, she told the staff that “it’s about time they woke up” !

Arrrghhh! It hasn’t. She’s claiming ‘exemption’ (which I’m certain isn’t valid but, unfortunately, she doesn’t have to prove it!) 😦

Ah, the beauty of the internet and the modern age. Michael Gove says everyone should use common sense but there is no ‘common sense’ where humans are involved. Our Scottish leader at least gives clear factual info, updated every night, and is a good communicator unlike Trump or Boris… the rest is up to intelligent thinking by individuals… which is where everything falls down at the other end.

There seems to be a sad lack of critical thinking which leads to people believing everything they read on t’internet. Not sure how they manage if they read conflicting views…

She has lots of company who believe these things. They are all over the place. Here in the US, they are rampant.

I’ve just had this email from a friend, another shop encounter –
“My son Jon was in his local shop last week, when the owner said to the man in front of Jon, I didn’t expect to see you for a few days, given how Ill you were yesterday.
The man said “I had a high temperature and a bad headache. It must be something I ate.”
It frightened the daylights out of Jon.”

How worrying! And it would have said on the shop door not to come in if you were having a high temperature. I’ll be glad when people have to wear a mask before they come into shops.

Note to such Conspiracy Theory ranters: Just having a relative on a ventilator might lead to someone like myself being peeled off your maskless body one of these days/rants…If he should die…I make no promises whatsoever — except there will BE a response.

Yes exactly. And it’s such a frightening experience being on a ventilator too. I’ve been on one a few times during my worst asthma attacks.

I’ve had an old friend die of this. I wouldn’t have been very polite.

I didn’t feel like being polite. But I think myself and the masked lady were a bit stunned.

Nut jobs; I avoid having any type of conversation with those types of people. Their world view is distorted….she’ll learn the hard way when she gets sick

I thought that but then I thought that, for some reason, people like her usually get lucky and not get sick and so she won’t learn at all.

What always gets me about conspiracy theories is the amount of people that would have to keep a secret (all those doctors for instance), I don’t know three people who can keep a secret between them!

We just had a guy start at work who thinks much like the women you encountered. I told him to enjoy his beliefs but follow the safety protocols while he’s around me.

You took the right line. It’s going to be illegal after the 24th of this month here to go in a shop without a mask so, hopefully, that will sort her out. Still won’t make her wash her hands though 😦

The bit about 45,000 fake death certificates is a new one on me. Can you imagine the paper and ink that would waste? I wouldn’t have been able to resist calling her a clown to her face with that nonsense.

I did nearly burst out laughing at the picture of all those GPs furiously scribbling the same death notices again and again – it would be like doing ‘lines’ for detention at school!
