2022 Stats Post/Happy New Year!

2 01 2023

Feel free to add your own stats in the comments below…

My aim for this year was to average one hill per day throughout the year.  However, I was on 365 hills by mid Autumn so decided to up it to 400 for the year.  By December 13th, I had 394 so all looked in the bag… of course, that was the day I broke my wrist on an icy lane after my impromptu four hills!  That meant I had six hills left to do in two weeks with a badly broken wrist and not able to drive to the hills.

I spent a lot of time lying awake scheming… there were three small hills I could get to by bus so I determined to do these two days running.  The hills were Binsey, Whittas Park and Caermote – a Wainwright, an Outlying Wainwright and an ‘other’ (a no-status hill).  There’s a mile walk to the next village for the bus and then it takes you to the very start of the southern Binsey track – the bus stop is one even the bus drivers don’t know about so mustn’t get used much.

From Caermote I had a slight trespass down farm fields to the main road just short of my favourite eating place, Craggs where the staff, who have been delivering baking to my house since my accident, were most surprised to see me walk in!  My trespass down the farmland was, by the way, done in a bright red winter jacket past the farmer who was feeding his sheep – he didn’t say owt anyway.

The first day it was due to rain all day (which it pretty much did so I just put full Paramo waterproofs on) but it was warm and calm.  The second day was quite a gale so reaching the summits was a bit more challenging.  It had been hard to find footwear as I can’t lace anything up so that rules out hillgoing footwear.  I’d decided my ‘fashion’ snowboots were my best bet and they were great!  Comfortable, ‘fur’-lined and rubber cleated soles with good grip.  I’ve had to refurbish them somewhat after two days on the hill!  I was still scared on the grassy descents though after my fall as the paths had turned to slippery mush instead of firm grass – it’s just been so wet this year!

After my double egg and chips followed by trifle at Craggs both days I had a mile to walk up the main road to catch the bus back and then the mile at the other end back to my house.  So, I hit the magic target of 400 but really had to work for them at the end!

Still haven’t been to Wales and have stuck to the Lake District Hills and my local Pennines and I’ve done some circuits very many times, e.g. the Binsey hills 27 times and Meal Fell area hills 23.  But I’ve also enjoyed trips to the Ennerdale Hills as they were far less frequented so I could get some peace, and revisited other hills I haven’t been on for years!  I did have a long chat to a superb gent on Lank Rigg one day… he was 80 years old and a regular visitor to the area and doing longer rounds than me!

A new hill this year and a new favourite

Wainwright Reascents: 257
Wainwright Outlying: 13
Hewitts: 2 (Fell Head and Nine Standards Rigg)
Other: 128
Hill grand total: 400

Scottish trips: 1 for my Highland Cross cycling/walking across Scotland in a day challenge
Car Camping trips: 0  as I had to retire my beloved Sunny this January 😦
English trips: 3 (all Lake District but just further away – couldn’t manage more due to frequent job changes!)

After-work hills: 29

Before-work hills: 11

Gills explored: 0 – must try harder!

Outdoor climbs: 1 outing to my favourite local quarry yielding: 5 climbs but at a lower grade this year, the hardest being 2 HDiffs

Ticks: 0 for a change

Still this year, I find that I’m now at a disadvantage living locally to the Lakes hills as you can only really get parked to do anything if you’re staying in lodgings in the valley you want to walk in. Otherwise there is no parking until around 1500 or 1600 which in winter is just too late to set off and can be quite inconvenient in summer too! 😦

Weather-wise in my end of Cumbria we had probably the worst year ever!  Summer staggered in sometime around mid June and had definitely gone again by September.  It was mostly no warmer than 70degF and generally much cooler, which is very poor, and extremely windy (I lost count of the days I was unable to stand up on minor summits such as Great Cockup).  It must also have been the wettest I’ve ever seen the fells – they only had around a 3-week break from the constant soaking and this year the paths were in spate on some walks never mind the becks!  My choice of hills got smaller as the year progressed as I won’t damage my precious hill’s paths in very wet conditions.

As to the famous heat waves this year… well we had a 2-day one and a 3-day one – admittedly it was very hot then for fell walking.

You might remember the problematic Ford Ka I bought for work last year… well it had a coolant leak so I took it in to trace the source.  They found one leak but not the other two and the car ended up overheating.  This not only meant the car stopped and refused to continue (very sensibly on its part) but it turned out to have caused major engine damage.  I nearly died when I got the final bill as there wasn’t much change out of two grand!! 😮

Hoping for better weather in 2023 and less broken bones/accidents.  Hope you all have a good year and thanks for bearing with me!

A few photos from my Highland Cross walk – one of my greater achievements…

I am amazed at your tenacity, and a little inspired, recently did Ling and Sale, very pleasant walks, and in October we did some walking from Boot in Eskdale. You are lucky to live up there. Good luck with the new boots, and take care.

I do Ling Fell a lot – especially after or before work – a little favourite of mine. I also like Sale Fell but haven’t done it in the last couple of years. Boot in Eskdale is just about my favourite place to walk from – I love that valley!

Happy new year. You had a busy year and I hope 2023 will be great for you. I agree last summer was miserable in the Lakes we couldn’t enjoy the fells as much as we did the previous years. Hopefully summer 2023 will be better.

Apparently it’s a La Nina year which I think usually makes our weather worse!

No idea how many hills I’ve done but then again I spend more time sitting around drinking tea on a walk than actually walking (apart from the odd madcap day) 😀
All the best for 2023 and hope the wrist is on the mend

I have to admit I only have a break if I can find somewhere sunny, warm and sheltered – I therefore rarely hang around on summits.

My arm is becoming more manoeverable and a bit more help but the other bone really hurts and I’m going to ask them to look into that when I go for my stitches out on Fri

I’m amazed. Makes me tired just thinking about your hill walking year. Now I’m an OAP I’m hoping to get another (10 year old or so) car as well, as the current one is on its last legs and can’t go far. Having had an employment gap I’m skint at the moment but hopefully will be semi affluent again soon… but even then I have no intention of doing a hill every day… ever!
Just think Carol, when you retire you can pack even more hills in with the extra spare time you will have.

That’s mainly why I really want to retire then I can really get on with the hills. I’ll be less tired too and, you never know, they might even give me a bus pass!

I’ll need to buy another car when I retire but, after seeing how bad second-hand cars can get, it’ll have to be a new one out of my savings…

I’ve never been able to afford (or inclined to shell out 15,000 plus) for a new car, even when I was earning good money although buying second hand cars be a gamble… but I can afford asparagus now and again as a treat and might even go on the med diet now I can afford to eat healthy and I’m getting older. Best wishes for 2023.

it saves money to buy new so long as you keep the car for many years (which I generally do). Either that or you need almost new from a garage who worries about their reputation and who give a long and comprehensive guarantee!

Happy new year Carol. Blimey that’s a lot of hills done.

Been a rubbish year for me stats wise for a variety of reasons including medical issues and a loss of confidence. Not sure what 2023 will bring but let’s see what happens. Got a few trips planned, health issues permitting.

I think I’ll be having a dip in confidence this year after my slip – shame as I’d finally built up a good level of confidence. Hope your health issues get sorted.

Happy New Year to you, Carol, and I hope 2023 brings you much fun, fitness and fair weather.

As I finished reading your first paragraph I thought ‘well, I think you can easily pat yourself on the back for achieving your original goal of 365, and with that hideous accident just before Christmas you can more than be excused for not reaching the extension to 400. You got so close anyway, so well done.’ But then I read on in awe to find your indomitable spirit drove you on to reach the full quota – even with that poorly wrist! What a gal! 🙂

You really are an inspiration, Carol, and I’ve loved reading this review of your hiking year. You should be very proud of yourself achieving so much, especially as you’ve done it all on the heels of the past few years’ trials and restrictions. Superb photos, of course, and your new hill friend looks very inviting, so I wish you many more enjoyable walks on that too. I just hope the car situation improves!

All the best with the mending wrist, and here’s to another year’s great walks. 🙂

I couldn’t have rested with just 6 hills to go – luckily there are some very easy hills in my area of the Lakes and the bus service is quite good although very expensive

I really admire your spirit. 🙂 We’ve discovered we have a good bus service here too. Maybe it’s something to do with living in a tourist hotspot. Haven’t discovered how expensive our is yet though! 🙂

I always used to use the bus for Snowdon as there are at least 10 good routes up and buses go all around the mountain. I used to get the bus to one route, decide on the summit which descent I fancied and get the bus back round to my start.

I’m not sure whether you’re extremely brave or a bit bonkers tackling those hills in fashion snow boots and a broken wrist via bus!!! Probably a bit of both 😂 – but, then again, many of us are.
A great achievement tackling all those hills, particularly with some transport difficulties. Good luck for 2023 – hope ou manage to get to Wales.

I am really missing Wales but I really hate the drive down the M6 – our end of the M6 is so lovely and quiet and you don’t have to pass major conurbations like Greater Manchester.

It might have seemed brave but those are very safe and easy hills and the ice had gone.

The boots were truly great on the hill – they just came back in quite a mess. I’ve given them a good scrub and waterproofing though and they look okay again now. They’ve actually done 2 hills before from Kendal anyway…

When we first moved here, we heard firing most days, now it’s a rarity. I suspect they could open the ranges for many more days a week.

It’s been a badly treated car I think. I hope to sell it next year if the Government let me retire!
