New House – Motorbike Move

22 09 2017

Wed 20 Sep 2017
One of the trickier things I had to move for my house move was my motorbike, ‘Millie’. Why is it difficult to move my bike you may well ask? Well, for a start, she hadn’t gone further than down the end of my road and back once a year for the last 10 years – apart from a quick trip for an MOT in May – and the journey to my new house is 100 miles. A trifle optimistic I’d say… Read the rest of this entry »

Around Ireby & Uldale, NW Cumbria

30 05 2016

Come spring, summer and Autumn, I spend approximately half my time in Cumbria and half (around my working shifts) in the Yorkshire Dales. In a few years, when the Government finally let me retire, it will be nearer 100% of the time in north-west Cumbria as that’s where I intend to move to. This is why…

Ethical Walking Wear

21 03 2016

I’m not aiming to make this a preachy post – you can wear whatever you like on the hill and it’s nothing to do with me. I don’t write many posts on walking gear as I’m not much of a gear freak but, during conversations about it, I often find that many walkers have no idea what their chosen product might entail during production. So, in case you’re using products which are cruel to creatures and are not aware of why and how but would care if you found out, this post aims to address that. Read the rest of this entry »

Merry Christmas!

25 12 2015

Well I was going to send this last night but, when I logged onto my PC it was very weird and almost looked virused. After a quick disconnect of the network cable and a reboot, things looked better but it was bedtime by then.

So here it is, Merry Christmas (as the song goes)…

Cumbrian Flood Appeal

8 12 2015

For those who’ve seen the devastation caused to our beloved Lake District this week by the dreadful weather (Dreadful Desmond), if you’re wondering if there’s anything you can do to support the poor folks who’ve been made homeless just before Christmas, and the businesses which have been ruined yet again, there is an appeal fund set up…

You can donate via Just Giving

“Or by sending a cheque made payable to Cumbria Community Foundation and sent to CCF, Dovenby Hall, Cockermouth, Cumbria, CA13 0PN.

“Or send a text to 70070 with the message ‘FLUD15’ and a monetary amount. For example, ‘FLUD15 £10’

(love the spelling on the text one 😉 )

The webpage about the fund is here

Bereft in The Slig – The Personality Defects of a Bagger

23 08 2015

Many people ask me why I’m a mountain ‘list bagger’, especially when they learn of my fears in the hills and how many hills I go out and tackle but which scare me stupid. I spend quite a bit of time musing on that myself. But it is only when I ‘compleat’ a list, or am close to ‘compleating’, that I find answers.

I spent a very depressed night in The Sligachan Inn on Skye at the end of our last trip and was prompted to muse some more… here are the answers I’ve come up with so far. Read the rest of this entry »

Animal Attacks!

3 07 2014

More and more I’m reading in the news now, and on the various walking forums, about animal attacks on hikers – mainly cattle attacks. As a ‘countryperson’ who has lived alongside livestock all my life, I feel I can possibly offer some advice. DISCLAIMER: Of course, as with all advice, it won’t always hold true in every circumstance especially as, when dealing with animals, moods and personalities come into play just the same as with humans… Read the rest of this entry »

Easter Jokelet :-)

24 04 2014

“How’s the diet going?” I asked the missus.

“Not good.” she sighed, “I had eggs for breakfast this morning.”

“Oh dear,” I sympathised.  “Fried?”

“Cadbury’s.” She responded.

Islam – Discuss!

10 08 2013

My friend at work has just been handed a flyer by an evangelising Moslem in Bradford… it says:

“Is Islam:
* a mediaeval religion with no significance in current times?

* Oppressive, cruel and unfair to women?

* a religion which preaches terrorism and forceful conversions?

* Propogating to men to grow beards and become extremists and to women to cover up from head to toe and have no role to play in society?

* Truly the fastest growing religion?

Find out about the real Islam…
at (date & time and an address in Bradford)

All non Muslims are especially invited (males only)

Dear God – males only? What was that 4th question again? the one about whether women have a role to play in moslem society??
