Wandhope via Addacombe Hole

4 07 2019

Wed 15 May 2019
Since peering down into the abyss once from the summit of Wandhope, I’ve always been fascinated by the coombe or hanging valley of Addacombe Hole. I noted at the time that a path bravely set off down a little ridge at the edge of the hole but was put off by the steepness above and below the hole. Recently, since my hip improved, my ambitious streak has started up again and I suddenly decided it had to be done! Read the rest of this entry »

Glaramara & Allen Crags

23 06 2019

Wed 10 Apr 2019
During mine and Richard’s trip to say farewell to the folks we stay with down Borrowdale, Richard also wanted to say farewell to Langstrathdale. He wanted to see if it was as long a valley (the ‘Lang’ in the name) as he remembered… Read the rest of this entry »

Evening Dock Tarn & Haystacks Again

6 06 2019

Although Rosthwaite in Borrowdale is too near where I now live for me to stay, we’ve stayed for decades now at The Royal Oak Hotel in Rosthwaite and become very friendly with the owners and staff. I’ve just received an e-mail saying the place has now been sold and so I thought we’d best book a few nights’ stay in order to see everyone again and see how we can keep in touch! Binsey & Whittas Park in the Snow

8 03 2019

Sat 2 Feb 2019

Still getting going in the hills after the hip op but this was before the last post where I finally managed to get into the bigger hills at last (Fairfield/Blencathra). I’ve been waiting for my film using up/processing though…

Fairfield & Great Rigg on a Dire Day

14 02 2019

Tue 12 Feb 2019
Richard and I have a yearly trip to our most luxurious hotel in Grasmere once a year – generally in February. For this year’s trip, Richard expressed an interest in doing Fairfield from the hotel. Never one to discourage Richard being keen on a walk (he can be unenthusiastic), I readily agreed – but I did have a few doubts about whether I was up to such a large hill – since my hip op, I’ve only really been doing small hills under 2000 feet. Fairfield is over 2800 feet… Read the rest of this entry »

Richard’s Wainwright Compleation – Branstree & Selside Pike

31 10 2018

Tue 31 July 2018
This was my last hillwalk prior to my hip replacement operation in August. I wasn’t sure I’d make it round but we’d joined up with friend and fellow blogger Simon H so at least Richard wouldn’t be on his own for his Wainwright compleation if I had to turn back. I fully expected to… Read the rest of this entry »

Woooo! SOMETIMES I can still do it!

16 05 2018

Wed 16 May 2018
I was out in the car today driving towards a titchy little fell in beautiful weather to have a small amount of exercise – all I can generally manage nowadays. As I drove, I changed my mind completely and decided to go for something far, far larger and see what happened. Skiddaw or bust!

Sledging on Blencathra! (archival)

25 01 2018

In March 2008, I’d just got back from the Aviemore area where I’d finally managed to acquire a plastic sledge suitable for adult use – I’d been after one for years! I was off on a trip to the Lakes with my friend Richard and, as it had been snowing a bit at home, decided to take it on the off chance as I’ve had a burning desire for quite some time to sledge a great 2000 foot slope down the back of Skiddaw!
