Alcock Tarn in a Blizzard!

9 03 2018

Tue 13 Feb 2018
Richard and I were staying at our favourite Grasmere Hotel. I’d had a walk just to Easedale Tarn the day before but my leg wasn’t good so we decided to just do a round of the quite high Alcock Tarn the next day. It ended up quite a day of two halves!

A Bad Day on my Favourite Mountain – and its proper name!

20 02 2018

As I’m not doing much at the moment with my knackered hip, this is from way back…

I’ll start with a quick rant about my favourite mountain and the becoming common abuse of his name – my favourite mountain is Snowdon… not ‘mount’ Snowdon… ever! Of course, its real name is Welsh and you can either say Eryri or Yr Wyddfa but the Welsh generally don’t mind if you stick to Snowdon. Read the rest of this entry »

Sledging on Blencathra! (archival)

25 01 2018

In March 2008, I’d just got back from the Aviemore area where I’d finally managed to acquire a plastic sledge suitable for adult use – I’d been after one for years! I was off on a trip to the Lakes with my friend Richard and, as it had been snowing a bit at home, decided to take it on the off chance as I’ve had a burning desire for quite some time to sledge a great 2000 foot slope down the back of Skiddaw! Log Pile!

11 01 2018

Since I’ve moved to the ‘wilds’ of Cumbria, well at least a very rural hamlet, I’ve gained a log burner. I’m still crap at lighting it unfortunately but am hoping I’ll learn.

One thing I have been good at though, is getting in wood. I haven’t bothered buying any, just waited until after the Autumn gales and then gone out on foot with my bag and my saw looking for fallen wood of a decent size. I saw up some of it in situ – one woodland even has a handy river bridge on the road where you can use the walls as a multi-height saw bench! The rest I carry home as long logs and saw in the back yard.

Anyway, this is my full log pile sitting drying – all got by my own grubby hands!

Not bad eh! 🙂 Mind you, with the very cold winter we’re having this year, it goes down quickly once you start…

2017 Stats Post/Happy New Year!

31 12 2017

Feel free to add your own stats in the comments below…

Not much in my stats this year courtesy of my often non-working, needing-replacing bad hip. Hardly anything in Scotland in fact…

Merry Christmas to you all!

23 12 2017

Hope you all have a great Christmas!
This photo is of the sun one day this year – it was actually much brighter red than my digi-camera shows and was truly weird. The reason it was red, apparently, was because dust from the Sahara was in the atmosphere making it appear red through the haze…

Kendal Rambling – Hay Fell & Scout Scar

14 12 2017

Tue 12 & Wed 13 December 2017
Richard and I have just come back from our favourite winter Lake District Hotel – Castle Green at Kendal. We did as much walking as my knackered leg would allow but what with that and the weather, nothing high or difficult. Read the rest of this entry »
